Difference Between Pyrolysis and Incineration

2024-09-26

Pyrolysis and incineration are two technologies commonly used in waste treatment, energy recovery and other fields, and there are significant differences between them. The following are the main differences between pyrolysis and incineration:

1. Reaction conditions

• Pyrolysis: Pyrolysis is a reaction in which organic matter is decomposed by heating under anaerobic or anoxic conditions. In this process, the high molecular bonding state of organic substances is destroyed and decomposed into low molecular substances such as gas, liquid (oil) and solid (coke). Pyrolysis is an endothermic process that requires an external heat source to provide the required energy.
• Incineration: Incineration is the process of burning combustible substances through high-temperature oxidation reactions under aerobic conditions. During the incineration process, combustible substances react with oxygen in the air to produce harmless combustion products such as carbon dioxide and water vapor. Incineration is an exothermic process that releases large amounts of heat energy.

2. Product characteristics

• Pyrolysis products: The products of pyrolysis are mainly flammable low molecular compounds, including gases (such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen, methane, etc.), liquids (such as bio-oil) and solids (such as coke). These products have certain calorific value and chemical value and can be further utilized or processed.
• Products of incineration: The main products of incineration are carbon dioxide and water vapor, which are usually emitted directly into the atmosphere. In addition, some waste residue and waste gas will be produced during the incineration process, which need to be treated to meet environmental emission standards.

3. Energy Utilization

• Pyrolysis: Since the pyrolysis products have calorific value and chemical value, they can be used in power generation, heating, chemical raw materials and other fields through appropriate treatment and conversion. In addition, the heat energy generated during the pyrolysis process can also be recycled.
• Incineration: The large amount of heat energy generated during the incineration process can be recovered and used to generate electricity, heat water, or generate steam. However, the direct utilization value of incineration products is relatively low, and there is a risk of secondary pollution.

4. Environmental impact

• Pyrolysis: Relatively few pollutants are produced during pyrolysis and can be further reduced through appropriate treatment measures. In addition, the diversification of pyrolysis products also provides more options for subsequent environmentally friendly treatment.
• Incineration: Some harmful gases and particulate matter may be produced during the incineration process, which may have a certain impact on the environment. Therefore, strict environmental protection measures need to be taken during the incineration process to ensure that the discharged waste gas, waste residue, etc. meet environmental emission standards.
