What is the difference between pyrolysis and carbonization?

First, pyrolysis refers to the process of heating organic matter to a certain temperature under oxygen-free or oxygen-deficient conditions to decompose it into gas, liquid and solid products. The pyrolysis process is relatively complex and involves a variety of chemical reactions, including cracking, dehydrogenation, condensation, etc.

Carbonization usually refers to the process of treating organic matter at high temperature to make it lose most of its volatile components and form a solid substance with a high carbon content. Carbonization mainly focuses on making the carbon element in the substance relatively enriched to form a carbon-like structure.

Secondly, the temperature range is different

The pyrolysis temperature range is relatively wide, and can vary from lower temperatures (such as 300℃ - 500℃) to higher temperatures (such as 800℃ - 1000℃ or even higher) according to different raw materials and target products.

Carbonization is generally carried out at relatively high temperatures, usually above 600℃, and can even reach 1000℃ - 2000℃.

Then there are the characteristics of the products.

The pyrolysis products are diverse, including pyrolysis gas (mainly composed of hydrogen, methane, carbon monoxide, etc.), pyrolysis oil (complex composition, containing a variety of organic compounds) and pyrolysis carbon. The properties of pyrolysis carbon depend on the raw materials and pyrolysis conditions, and may have different pore structures and surface chemical properties.

Carbonization products are mainly carbonization products, with high carbon content and relatively stable structure.

Carbonized materials usually have high hardness, conductivity and thermal stability.

Finally, the application fields are different.

The application fields of pyrolysis are mainly: energy field; resource recovery, environmental governance, etc.

The main application fields of carbonization are: materials field; metallurgical industry and chemical industry, etc.
